Located between the cities of Maryland and Illinois, the Des Moines area is one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest. The metropolitan area has a total population of about five million people. The University of Iowa is located in the heart of downtown, where the “Five Year Track”, the state’s annual collegiate athletic event, is held. The University of Illinois – Urbana-BAX, which is also part of the University, is right across the street. The city was previously an industrial hub but is currently a cultural hub.

 

As it is a fast-growing city with events happening virtually every week, there are a variety of annual events that people can attend. The Des Moines Register lists many of these special events including the Iowa State Fair, the Northwest Iowa Corn Car Rally, the Iowa Rodeo, Great Taste with Soul, IA Writer’s Festival, and kedling competitions.

 

For a taste of celebrity culture, “The Biggest Loser” has been filmed in Des Moines. Other events include the 4th of July Fireworks in North Decatur, the Buckwheat Grass Festival in Westport, and the Des Moines Area Roller Hockey League in Winnetu.

 

Vacationing in Des Moines, Iowa is a great way to experience America’s heartland. The city has been voted the best city in the United States for its natural beauty. A great number of parks surround the city. If one wants to see the largest number of lakes in the state, they should check out the Cedar Lagoon which has five interconnected lacrosse pinnacles.

 

The University of Northern Illinois is located in Des Moines, Iowa just a few miles from downtown Des Moines. Students can find classes in College Gothic, College Liberal Arts, College Sciences, College Nursing, College Business, College History, College Mathematics, and College Health Sciences. The University also provides online classes as well as campus-based classes for students who are working and can’t make it into a traditional classroom.

 

A few blocks from the University is the University of Iowa in Iowa City, which is home to the College of Education. The city is one of the most populated cities in Iowa and is filled with college students and musicians all throughout the year. Music festivals such as College Music Fest take place every August, as do Jazz Fest and the Des Moines Arts Festival.

 

Des Moines, Iowa is quickly becoming known as a hot spot for young people and talented musicians. This influx of new music and culture will be great for the city and help boost the economy. Des Moines has shown growth in the business sector recently and is one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Iowa.
